Key information
On October 15, CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger hosted a premiere event in South Korea, showcasing the first episode of the upcoming Netflix animation, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. The series is scheduled for release on October 20.
The first episode features a significant evolution in art style, incorporating 90s-inspired aesthetics alongside innovative media art techniques. Studio Trigger executive Yoshiki Usa emphasized that this distinct visual direction serves as a primary selling point for the new season.
Unlike the first season, which focused on introducing the Cyberpunk 2077 world, the sequel shifts its narrative focus toward character-driven storytelling. The series introduces a four-protagonist system, featuring characters such as Wick Kingsley, D, Talia, and Roman, all of whom receive substantial screen time in the opening episode.
The series explores the Maelstrom gang in greater depth, particularly through the character Talia, who is described as an unconventional member. CDPR producer Satoru Honma noted that the production team debated her design extensively, hinting at internal conflicts within the gang. Additionally, the theme of family is central to the narrative, though the series maintains the dark, ominous atmosphere characteristic of the franchise.
Reviewing the first episode, the author praised the production's visual storytelling and character development, awarding it a score of 110 out of 100, noting that it effectively builds upon the established Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
