Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has confirmed he maintains a strict separation from the hero shooter he once led. Since departing Blizzard in 2021, Kaplan has ceased playing the game entirely and actively avoids online discourse surrounding the title to protect his mental well-being.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Kaplan detailed his strategy for disconnecting from the franchise. He avoids reading subreddits, watching YouTube content, and searching for his name or the game itself. He even instructs algorithms to stop suggesting Overwatch-related content, emphasizing that the game is no longer part of his life.

Kaplan noted that his previous departure from the World of Warcraft team served as a difficult learning experience. He described his time on that project as deeply tied to his identity, making the transition away from it emotionally painful. This experience helped him realize that the games he develops are Blizzard's intellectual property rather than his own.

Currently, Kaplan is focused on his new studio and the development of an open-world, action-survival shooter titled The Legend of California. He maintains that the current iteration of Overwatch belongs to its present developers and players, while he remains committed to his new professional chapter.
