Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan has confirmed he maintains a complete separation from the hero shooter he once led. Since departing Blizzard in 2021, Kaplan has actively avoided all online discourse, subreddits, and YouTube content related to the franchise to protect his mental well-being.

Kaplan stated he has not played Overwatch since April 2021. He intentionally trains his digital algorithms to ignore the game, noting that he no longer searches for his own name or the title itself, effectively disconnecting from the community he previously engaged with through developer updates.

Reflecting on his career, Kaplan described his departure from World of Warcraft as a more painful experience than leaving Overwatch. He characterized his time on the WoW team as an all-consuming identity, whereas his exit from Overwatch was facilitated by the realization that the intellectual property belonged to Blizzard rather than himself.

Currently, Kaplan is developing an open-world, action-survival shooter titled The Legend of California. He maintains that Overwatch now belongs entirely to its current developers and players, while he focuses on his new professional chapter.
