Key information
Microsoft is reportedly surveying select members of the Xbox Insider Program regarding the potential for major franchises to become Xbox console exclusives. According to Windows Central, the survey asks users how they would respond if titles such as Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, and the upcoming PHYSINT were restricted to Xbox platforms.
The survey presents various hypothetical scenarios, including the possibility of all future Xbox-developed titles becoming exclusive. Participants are asked to choose from options such as playing on their current Xbox console, purchasing a new Xbox, or switching to PC. Notably, the Call of Duty series is excluded from this specific inquiry.
Xbox CEO Satya Nadella has previously described platform exclusivity as a necessary path for the business, emphasizing the importance of providing unique content. However, CSO Matthew Ball has acknowledged the difficulty in justifying the choice of Xbox hardware, noting that exclusivity is a strategy to regain market share despite associated risks like global component shortages affecting the upcoming Project Helix console.
Windows Central suggests that while making major titles exclusive could boost hardware sales, Microsoft faces significant challenges in securing sufficient inventory. Furthermore, it remains unclear if these survey results will directly influence future corporate policy, as the company continues to navigate a competitive landscape where rivals like Sony also emphasize platform-specific titles.
