The CG-ARTS association has announced the 2026 Animation Practical Examination, aimed at students aspiring to become CG animators. Registration for groups begins on October 1, 2026, with individual entries accepted from early November until November 30, 2026. Participation is limited to 500 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.
Participants must create a 10 to 15-second hand-animated CG sequence based on provided storyboards. The use of AI-generated video or motion capture data is strictly prohibited, though students may use reference footage or AI-based tools for production assistance. The examination evaluates core skills across five categories, including posing, layout, and camera work.
Five major CG production companies, including Sanzigen and Polygon Pictures, will evaluate the submissions. Scoring is split equally between a foundational assessment and a corporate evaluation based on new graduate hiring standards. Students receive feedback, including scores, national rankings, and professional advice. Additionally, a unique system allows supporting companies to highlight impressive work, aiding students in their job search.
The examination fee is set at 7,700 yen. Following the mid-December task announcement, students have until January 15, 2027, to submit their work. Results and feedback sheets are scheduled for distribution in early March 2027.
