The Croatian game developer Gamepires has officially announced a reduction in studio size through layoffs. This decision, communicated via the official X account for their open-world survival title SCUM, aims to ensure long-term sustainability while adapting to challenging market conditions.

The layoffs impact various studio members, including those working on the SCUM development team. Although the company did not disclose the specific number of affected employees, they emphasized that this move is a business decision rather than a reflection of individual performance, expressing gratitude for the staff's contributions.

Despite the workforce reduction, Gamepires confirmed that development of SCUM will continue. The studio remains committed to releasing future updates and additional content for the game, which officially launched on June 17, 2025, following a lengthy early access period that began in August 2018.

Gamepires, established in 2010, was previously acquired by Jagex in 2022. Reports indicate that Splash Damage acquired the studio in February 2026, though Splash Damage has not issued an official announcement regarding these recent changes as of October 14, 2026.
