Key information
Epic Games has released a preview version of a completely redesigned Epic Games Store client for Windows and Mac, which introduces support for Linux for the first time. The company claims the new launcher reaches the store page from a cold start 46% faster than Steam, with startup times reportedly halved during the testing phase.
The updated client features a redesigned library view and allows users to add shortcuts for games installed via other platforms like Steam. According to Martin Keely, general manager for Epic Games Store, the team rebuilt the store and launcher shell from scratch using a new architecture rather than reusing legacy code.
Development of the new features involved AI tools for writing and reviewing code, aligning with CEO Tim Sweeney's strategy for maximal AI acceleration across the company. While Epic states these technical improvements were verified by an external party, PC Gamer reported that they had not conducted independent testing of the client at the time of the announcement.
The preview is currently available for download via the Epic Games website. Epic intends to expand the user base gradually while gathering feedback to address potential issues. Additionally, the company is working on upgrading Easy Anti-Cheat to support Fortnite and other multiplayer titles on Linux, though no completion date for this project has been announced.
