SEGA and Creative Assembly have removed Total War: Shogun 2 - Complete Edition from digital storefronts following widespread backlash. The companies acknowledged that the release failed to meet player expectations and internal quality standards. While the new edition is being sent back to the development phase, owners who already purchased the title retain access to the game.
Developed alongside MATABOO, the Complete Edition aimed to modernize the 2011 strategy title with visual enhancements, 64-bit support, and compatibility with NVIDIA and AMD upscaling technologies. However, users reported significant technical issues, including severe frame rate drops during battles and the presence of flawed AI-generated illustrations, such as distorted facial features and hands with six fingers.
The release faced intense criticism, resulting in an 'Extremely negative' rating on Steam with only 16% positive reviews from over 3,200 users. Players expressed frustration over the perceived poor management and the use of AI to modify existing artwork, which some described as an insult to the original artists and the legacy of the 2011 game.
In response to the controversy, SEGA has reinstated the original version of Total War: Shogun 2 for purchase. While the companies are currently investigating the issues with their development partner, they have not provided a timeline for when the Complete Edition might return or specific details regarding future technical adjustments.
