At E3 2009, Sony revealed a partnership with Rockstar Games to develop Agent, a PlayStation-exclusive spy title overseen by founders Sam and Dan Houser. Although intended as a successor to 2008's Grand Theft Auto 4, the project never reached completion.
Dan Houser explained that Rockstar assigned multiple teams to the open-world spy game, but they struggled to finalize the mechanics. He noted that while the developers created strong individual components, they failed to integrate these elements into a cohesive, functional package.
Houser stated that the team could not reconcile the global scope of classic spy films with the limitations of an open-world game structure. Ultimately, the studio concluded that the project was not a game they could successfully execute.
While former Take-Two president Ben Feder once positioned the title as a major AAA release, the game never received an official launch date. Rockstar North subsequently shifted focus to other projects, including 2013's GTA 5 and the upcoming GTA 6.
