Developers of World of Warcraft: Forever, the upcoming Classic+ experience, intend to keep gear relevant for a long time by avoiding the rapid power inflation seen in modern expansions. Vice president Ion Hazzikostas noted that the team aims to prevent the frequent invalidation of old content, favoring a gradual progression system where items from different tiers coexist.

To achieve this, the game features modest item level increases and niche gear designed for specific encounters. Principal designer Kris Zierhut explained that items are intentionally idiosyncratic rather than perfect, requiring players to make strategic choices. Additionally, the team has lowered skill requirements for tradeskills, ensuring crafted gear remains valuable during the leveling process.

The developers are also working to "un-solve" the game by keeping item properties secret until they are discovered on the server. This prevents datamining from revealing the best gear paths, effectively forcing players to explore and experiment as they did in 2004. Rare chase items will be included for every boss to keep the meta evolving.

While the team acknowledges that these systems may increase pressure on inventory space, they are currently exploring solutions like additional bank or bag slots. World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4, with developers emphasizing that while gear will remain useful for a long time, players will eventually reach a point where they have collected their desired items.
