Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser recently expressed regret regarding his work on the 2012 shooter Max Payne 3. During an interview for the IGN30 Icons series, Houser admitted that his creative contributions to the project were not a success.
Houser noted that he initially viewed the title's linear design, cinematic presentation, and absence of loading screens as an innovative approach to digital noir. However, he acknowledged that these choices failed to resonate with the audience.
The writer attributed much of the dissatisfaction to the absence of Sam Lake, the creative director behind the original entries. Houser stated that fans missed Lake's specific writing style, and he accepted personal responsibility for the game's perceived failure.
While critics generally received the game well, it reportedly underperformed commercially. Players struggled with the shift to a brighter Brazil setting and a louder tone compared to the series' traditional gloom. Remedy is currently remaking the first two titles, while Rockstar focuses on the upcoming November 19 release of GTA 6.
