Following the controversy surrounding Red Dead Redemption II, where staff reported 100-hour work weeks, Rockstar Games has reportedly taken steps to mitigate mandatory overtime for the development of Grand Theft Auto VI. Journalist Jason Schreier recently visited Rockstar North to assess changes in the company's internal culture.
Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar's head of publishing, attributes improvements to a doubling of the workforce to 4,700 employees since 2018. The studio has also recalibrated task expectations and implemented better financial compensation for overtime. While Kolbe acknowledges the situation is not perfect, she maintains that conditions are significantly better than during the previous project.
Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Rockstar mandated a return to office in 2024, citing security concerns regarding potential leaks, which disappointed some staff members who lost remote flexibility. Additionally, Schreier notes that 34 employees were fired after attempting to form a union, a legal dispute currently pending until the middle of next month.
Schreier reports that dozens of employees he interviewed expressed a generally positive outlook regarding the company's efforts to improve internal culture, including the removal of managers described as toxic. However, the company continues to face scrutiny regarding its labor practices and the balance between security and employee working conditions.
