Sega and Creative Assembly have announced plans to temporarily remove Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition from digital storefronts. This decision follows significant community backlash regarding the remaster, which currently holds an Overwhelmingly Negative rating on Steam with only 17% positive reviews.
The remaster, developed with assistance from the porting company Mataboo, was intended to provide a 64-bit upgrade featuring improved lighting, textures, and 4K UI scaling. However, players report that the release is plagued by gameplay bugs and visual issues, including character models missing limbs or digits, which users attribute to the use of generative AI.
In a statement posted on X, the companies acknowledged that the current experience fails to meet their internal standards or player expectations. They are currently working with platform holders to reinstate the original version of the game while they investigate the reported technical and visual problems.
While Sega has committed to addressing these concerns, it remains unclear if the company will remove the disputed AI-generated assets or provide long-term access to the original game. This incident follows a pattern of Sega replacing older titles with updated versions that have faced criticism from the community.
