Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl has officially confirmed that the Call of Duty franchise will move away from its recent reliance on back-to-back Black Ops and Modern Warfare sequels. The company intends to introduce a brand-new sub-series in a future title to provide the fresh tonal shifts requested by the community.
The developer Treyarch previously teased that it is currently working on an experience unlike anything players have encountered before. Additionally, reports suggest that Sledgehammer Games is leading the development for the 2027 entry, which may also feature a new sub-franchise, following their previous work on 2021's Vanguard.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23 across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Players who preorder the title gain early access to the campaign starting October 16, with the DMZ mode becoming available on October 20.
Beyond the Call of Duty franchise, Activision is now managing the Halo series. While Xbox management plans to establish a new team for future Halo projects, there is speculation that a Call of Duty studio could potentially provide significant support for that development.
