Creative Assembly has removed the Total War Shogun 2 Complete Edition from sale following significant backlash from the community. Launched on Tuesday October 13, the remaster currently holds a 17% positive rating on Steam. The developer intends to investigate these concerns to ensure the title meets expected quality standards.
The remaster promised several technical and content updates, including 4K UI scaling, modernized controls, and over 50 new playable minor factions. It also featured fresh cutscenes and expanded language support for Japanese and Chinese. Despite these additions, the release has been met with widespread criticism regarding its value and execution.
Players have criticized the $39.99 price point, arguing the release feels like a free update rather than a paid remaster. Additional complaints include persistent bugs from the original game, new technical issues, and poor optimization leading to crashes. Furthermore, users have negatively compared the new unit card designs to AI-generated art, though Creative Assembly and partner Mataboo have not confirmed the use of generative AI.
Creative Assembly is currently working with platform holders to reinstate the original version of the game for purchase. While the Complete Edition is unavailable, existing owners retain access to their copies. The developer has not provided a specific timeline for when the updated version might return to Steam.
