ASUS has introduced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, an anniversary edition handheld that prioritizes refined hardware over a generational performance leap. While the device retains the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of RAM, and 1 TB SSD found in its predecessor, it targets enthusiasts with a superior 7.4-inch OLED display.

The new OLED panel features a 1080p resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate, and a 0.2 ms response time. It supports HDR with a peak brightness of 1400 nits and includes an anti-reflective coating. ASUS also upgraded the controls, incorporating magnetic TMR joysticks to reduce drift and a redesigned D-pad for improved directional precision.

Reviewer assessments highlight that while these upgrades are high-quality, they may not justify an upgrade for existing owners. The device is priced at 1,399 euros, significantly higher than the previous model. Critics note that the handheld arrives late in the current cycle, facing competition from upcoming next-generation chips that promise greater performance.

Additional changes include improved cooling with 20% more airflow and a microSD Express reader. However, the unit now lacks an included charger, and the weight has increased to 756 grams. Despite the efficiency of the OLED panel, the 80 Wh battery remains unchanged, offering no significant improvement in real-world usage.
