Dean Hall, creator of DayZ and Icarus, has publicly criticized major game engine providers, specifically Epic Games and Unity, claiming the industry is suffering from greed. Hall argues that developers have surrendered too much control to companies whose interests may not align with their own, leading to an unsustainable environment.

In response, Hall has launched Brutal, an open-source, free-to-use game-making framework. Unlike traditional engines, Brutal is designed to provide developers with more autonomy. It requires attribution but carries no royalty fees or revenue-sharing requirements, aiming to serve as a potential lifeboat for creators.

Hall expressed dissatisfaction with Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney regarding engine accountability, particularly concerning performance and stability issues. Hall contends that Unreal Engine's five percent royalty model on revenue above a certain threshold warrants greater scrutiny, as he believes developers should not simply accept these terms.

While Hall acknowledges that Brutal is not a universal solution for every project, he hopes it will empower developers by providing access to source code and the ability to fork the framework. This initiative is intended to shift the balance of power, ensuring developers remain independent through their tools.
