The 2026 Street Fighter reboot has arrived in theaters, positioning itself as a direct competitor to Mortal Kombat 2. While the film successfully outshines its rival in pure action sequences, it ultimately falters due to a script that remains overly tethered to its two protagonists, Ryu and Ken.
Visually, the production is a vibrant celebration of 90s Camp aesthetics. Costume designer Kym Barrett and the hair and makeup team successfully translated the franchise's eccentric character designs into live-action, including Guile's iconic hairstyle, without sacrificing the source material's essence.
Director Kitao Sakurai delivers frenetic, high-quality combat choreography reminiscent of John Wick, utilizing neon lighting and atmospheric fog to enhance the experience. Despite this technical prowess, the reviewer notes that the film suffers from a lack of character depth. Supporting figures like Chun-Li and M. Bison are relegated to mere plot devices, failing to receive the development afforded to the leads.
Although the cast, including Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji, shows clear dedication, the film's narrative scope remains limited. The reviewer suggests that while the project was crafted with genuine affection for the franchise, it plays it safe, potentially reserving deeper expansion for future sequels contingent on box office performance.
