Key information
The decomp.dev community, a platform dedicated to information exchange regarding game decompilation and code organization, is shutting down. Founder @encounter announced the decision, citing an inability to prevent the misuse of open-source community activities following rapid advancements in AI technology.
While @encounter acknowledged that AI can accelerate decompilation, the community's core mission of fostering contributions and mutual benefit has been undermined. The founder highlighted that AI is now being used to create unauthorized ports and derivative projects without contributing back to original research efforts or ensuring quality verification.
The founder expressed concern that the term 'decompilation' is increasingly synonymous with 'PC porting' in spaces like Reddit, which deviates from the community's original research-focused goals. Although @encounter maintains that AI itself is a useful tool when applied correctly, the difficulty of managing its ethical use led to the current closure.
New project submissions and indexing have been disabled, though existing project tracking and historical data remain available. The site remains under the control of @encounter, who has explicitly prohibited any replication of the platform.
