Thirty-five years ago, game designer Eric Chahi independently developed the action-adventure title Another World. Released in 1991 for Amiga 500 and Atari ST, the game later arrived on the Super Famicom in 1992. Chahi handled all aspects of development, including graphics and programming, without a team.
The game features a narrative about a youth named Lester transported to an alien world. It relies on rotoscoped polygon animation and music to convey the story, intentionally omitting dialogue and interface elements. Chahi utilized his own custom-built polygon editors and programming languages to overcome hardware limitations of the era.
Renowned creators such as Fumito Ueda, Hideo Kojima, and Goichi Suda have publicly cited Another World as a significant influence. Chahi recently visited Japan for the first time in 13 years, showcasing original production materials like hand-drawn code notebooks and rotoscoping equipment to illustrate the realities of early independent development.
Chahi’s approach evolved from being technology-driven due to strict hardware constraints to focusing on the expression of ideas and emotions. While his early work was defined by overcoming technical hurdles, his later projects, such as the 2020 VR title Paper Beast, prioritize the synergy between technology and creative vision.
