An explosion at Intel’s Kiryat Gat plant in southern Israel resulted in two deaths and one serious injury. The incident occurred on Wednesday during a material transfer process involving factory tanks. Emergency responders, including hazmat teams, contained the subsequent fire and monitored the area for hazardous substances.

Police are currently investigating a potential gas cylinder malfunction as the cause of the blast. While Israel’s Fire and Rescue Services identified the presence of nitrogen trifluoride, a toxic gas used for cleaning chipmaking tools, officials noted that the substance is not flammable. It remains unclear if this specific gas was directly responsible for the explosion.

The Kiryat Gat site houses Fab 28, which produces processors, 5G, and AI products using the Intel 7 process. Intel has not yet issued a statement regarding the victims or potential impacts on production. The facility has previously faced capacity constraints, with shortages for Intel 7 and Intel 10 expected to persist into 2026.

Local authorities confirmed there is no ongoing danger to the public, and no evacuations were required. Intel is scheduled to report its third-quarter results on Oct. 29, though it is currently unknown if the company will address the incident during that call.
