Hollywood star Tom Cruise and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu recently visited Japan to promote their upcoming film, DIGGER. During their stay, they attended the MAPPA EXPO 15th Anniversary exhibition, where they engaged in a creative dialogue with veteran animator Tadashi Hiramatsu.

The discussion explored the technical parallels between live-action filmmaking and animation. Hiramatsu explained that a single animation unit typically requires two to three months of production, including pre-production storyboarding. He noted that while most modern animators have transitioned to digital tools, he maintains a hybrid approach, emphasizing that physical drawing remains essential for understanding form and tactile expression.

Director Iñárritu highlighted that the production of DIGGER involved creating detailed photographic storyboards to plan lighting and camera layouts, a process he likened to the meticulous world-building found in animation. Cruise expressed his long-standing admiration for animation, noting that he frequently studies its composition and movement techniques to inform his own work in live-action cinema.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Attack on Titan The Final Season exhibit, where Cruise was photographed alongside a display of the character Eren. Hiramatsu also presented the duo with a custom illustration of DIGGER, which he created after viewing the film. Cruise expressed interest in returning to the studio in the future to meet more of the creative team.
