Valve is reportedly developing a new version of its Steam Frame VR device featuring OLED panels. According to reports from Steam Frame Hub, evidence found within Linux kernel driver code suggests the company is testing a device codenamed Plano.
The Plano prototype reportedly features a resolution of 3552 x 3840, which is three times higher than the 2160 x 2160 resolution found in the current model. This upgrade aims to address the visible screen-door effect and poor text clarity currently experienced by users.
Technical limitations persist as the device retains the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. This creates a bottleneck, forcing the default resolution to be halved to 1776 x 1920. Additionally, the device is limited to a 90 Hz refresh rate by default due to Micro OLED brightness and size constraints, requiring an experimental mode to reach 120 Hz or full resolution.
To manage performance, Valve may implement foveated scaling to adjust resolution based on eye tracking and game load. While this aims to simulate natural vision, concerns remain regarding the final user experience and potential price increases, given that the current model starts at NT$ 38,888.
