A full decade has passed since Nintendo first unveiled the console formerly codenamed NX. Following intense fan anticipation and limited information regarding the Wii U successor, the company officially revealed the Switch on October 20, 2016.
The reveal featured a three-and-a-half-minute video demonstrating the hybrid nature of the device. Nintendo showcased various scenarios, including a traveler playing Skyrim on a plane and professional Splatoon players practicing for a tournament.
One notable segment depicted a woman playing Super Mario Odyssey before bringing the console to a rooftop party. This specific scene sparked significant online debate regarding the social implications of using the device in such settings, with fans dubbing the character Nintendo Karen.
The marketing campaign was designed to emphasize the Switch brand following the commercial struggles of the Wii U. While some scenarios in the trailer proved realistic, others were viewed as exaggerated depictions of the console's social utility.
