Key information
The cooperative horror title Content Warning has temporarily halted its Steam Workshop operations due to the detection of malicious code. Developer Landfall announced the suspension on the 20th, citing security concerns regarding the distribution of harmful software through unofficial modifications.
In Content Warning, two to four players explore the ruins of the Old World in a diving bell to film monsters for the in-game platform SpookTube. Players use advertising revenue from their footage to purchase equipment, a loop that has recently been threatened by security vulnerabilities within the modding ecosystem.
Landfall has strongly advised users to delete all existing Workshop mods until further notice to ensure system safety. While the specific names of the compromised mods remain undisclosed, the developer is conducting a thorough investigation to address the security risks before restoring service.
This incident follows a trend of security threats targeting Steam Workshop, which has previously affected titles like People Playground, Wallpaper Engine, and RimWorld. The ease of applying mods via a single subscription button is increasingly being exploited as a vector for distributing malicious software.
