Rockstar Games anticipates that future projects will reach players significantly faster than the eight-year development cycle required for Grand Theft Auto 6. Phil Hooker, the studio's head of development, stated that the company expects to leverage the foundational technology and expanded team established during this current project to accelerate future production timelines.
The studio plans to shift its strategy toward expanding existing assets rather than repeatedly rebuilding core technology from scratch. By focusing on building sideways on established systems, leadership believes the team can avoid the lengthy gaps seen between previous major releases like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Structural growth has been a key component of this transition, with Rockstar expanding from 2,441 employees during the Red Dead Redemption 2 era to 4,711 staff members across 12 offices. This increased capacity, combined with the reuse of internal tools, is intended to minimize time spent on technical problem-solving.
While Rockstar has not yet announced its next title, the company hopes to replicate the rapid turnaround seen when Grand Theft Auto: Vice City followed its predecessor in under a year. However, the studio notes that these comments do not guarantee a specific release window for future games given the scale of their ongoing ambitions.
