Epic Games has introduced a preview version of its launcher, aiming to improve performance against competitor Steam. This development follows the company's recent workforce reductions and efforts to enhance Linux compatibility for Easy Anti-Cheat.
The company claims the new software is "vibe coded" and utilizes AI-first development. Independent testing by Keywords Studio indicates the launcher starts 46% faster than Steam, clocking in at 5.47 seconds compared to 10.07 seconds. Additionally, it reportedly restores from the system tray 14% faster.
Beyond speed, the update promises a redesigned user interface featuring improved search and filtering tools. Users can expect a customizable library and top bar, alongside reduced background resource consumption. The launcher also aims to function as a unified library for external PC games.
The preview remains in testing and currently lacks full feature parity with the standard version. Epic Games acknowledges potential bugs and is actively working to bridge these functional gaps for future releases.
