Two former Bethesda developers have launched DamnationX, a free project designed to revitalize the 1997 classic Diablo. This modification serves as a visual and functional update for PC players, introducing high-definition graphics and various gameplay refinements to the original Blizzard title.
The mod incorporates technical enhancements such as ray tracing, updated NPC art, and improved animations. It also integrates movement mechanics inspired by Diablo 2, a stamina bar, and a sprint feature that can be toggled for both players and enemies.
Despite these additions, the project is currently in early access and remains imperfect. Some textures lack high-definition upgrades, and certain animations have drawn criticism from fans, with some users humorously noting the warrior's awkward movement. The developers are actively seeking community feedback to address these issues in future updates.
DamnationX is available now as a mod for existing digital copies of Diablo on PC. Additionally, the developers have provided an option for users to test the project for free directly through a web browser.
