Valve has added Solomon to Deadlock, a third-person hero shooter and MOBA hybrid. Classified as a strategist, Solomon utilizes a chess-themed kit where he wields a chessboard as a weapon and fires chess pieces as ammunition.
Solomon's abilities involve summoning life-sized chess pieces. Bishops and rooks traverse the map to deal damage, while a knight allows for the repositioning of other characters. Additionally, a queen provides area-of-effect damage and can be manually moved periodically.
The hero's reload mechanic is uniquely tied to chess history. During a one-second reload, the game simulates a match where the final positions of the pieces are determined by the number of projectiles in the magazine. Fans discovered that these magazine capacities correspond to over 20 famous chess games spanning 170 years, including historical matches like the 1858 Opera Game by Morphy and the 2021 Double Bongcloud between Carlsen and Nakamura.
The reload animation features two distinct phases: an initial setup where the board is arranged, and a secondary phase that adjusts piece placement based on the current magazine count. This capacity can fluctuate during gameplay, with specific modifiers allowing players to increase or decrease the number of pieces available.
