Jason Schreier of Bloomberg recently visited Rockstar North to discuss the future of the studio. While the primary focus was on GTA 6, the conversation also addressed the company's long-term production strategy, specifically aiming to reduce the time required to release future major titles.
The development of GTA 6, initially codenamed Project Americas, began in 2015. Progress was temporarily slowed as resources shifted toward Red Dead Redemption 2. However, the experience gained from that project proved beneficial, allowing the team to refine their plans and establish a core structure for GTA 6 by the end of 2019.
Phil Hooker explained to Bloomberg that the studio has invested heavily in new tools, a robust engine, and a cohesive team. By utilizing these foundational elements, Rockstar intends to build future content more efficiently rather than starting from scratch, drawing a comparison to the rapid transition between GTA 3 and Vice City.
Because GTA 6 serves as a new technical foundation, the studio expects to accelerate its output. Consequently, the company anticipates that future major releases will not require an eight-year development window. Meanwhile, reports suggest a potential PC version of GTA 6 could arrive in the first quarter of 2027.
