At the 2025 Game Awards, comedian Andrew Schulz used his stage time promoting the upcoming Street Fighter film to call out the cast of the Mortal Kombat 2 movie. Schulz jokingly claimed the Mortal Kombat cast failed to attend the event because they prioritized money over their fans, contrasting them with his own team.
The remarks went viral, leading some fans to perceive the comments as an unfriendly jab at a fellow franchise. Actor Lewis Tan criticized the move, suggesting Schulz was the last person who should be speaking negatively on that stage. Schulz later explained that he intended the bit to be a good-natured, pro-wrestling-style work designed to generate buzz.
Schulz and his co-stars, Cody Rhodes and Eric Andre, maintained that they were attempting to foster a collaborative atmosphere similar to the Barbenheimer phenomenon. They expressed interest in a potential crossover between the Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat franchises, with the trio confirming they hold no genuine animosity toward the Mortal Kombat cast.
While the cast remains open to future collaborations, director Kitao Sakurai noted that the viability of future Street Fighter films depends on the performance of the first entry. The Street Fighter movie is scheduled to hit theaters on October 16, 2026.
