At the SAGA Barcelona Game Fest 2026, legendary composers Manami Matsumae and Miki Higashino held a talk session reflecting on their influential careers in game music. Matsumae, known for her work on the original Mega Man, and Higashino, celebrated for her contributions to the Gradius series and Suikoden, shared insights into their professional journeys and the evolution of the industry.

The composers discussed their early production methods, noting that they initially relied on manual data entry using tools like MSX or even writing scores on paper before MIDI technology became standard. Matsumae recalled that during her time at Capcom, she often composed based on her own creative vision, while Higashino described the quiet, focused atmosphere of early development teams where female staff members were prominent.

Higashino, who returned to the industry after a hiatus, expressed that the passing of Suikoden director Yoshitaka Murayama motivated her to resume composing. Meanwhile, Matsumae highlighted her current focus on independent projects, noting that many developers who grew up playing her early titles now seek her collaboration. She is currently working on a new project scheduled for release in 2027.

Both composers expressed enthusiasm for their first visit to Spain. While they remain open to working with their former employers, they currently find significant fulfillment in the creative freedom offered by the global indie game scene, where their music continues to reach new audiences.
