Bill Van Zyll, Vice President and General Manager of Nintendo Latin America, stated in an interview that the company has no plans to discontinue physical media. He emphasized that Nintendo remains neutral, prioritizing consumer preferences and acknowledging the strong attachment fans have to physical formats.
Van Zyll explained that physical editions incur various costs, including manufacturing, logistics, and storage, which naturally leads to price differences compared to digital versions. While Nintendo's global digital software sales ratio reached 61.5% in the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027, the company maintains support for physical media on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The industry landscape is shifting, as Sony announced it will cease physical disc production for PlayStation consoles starting January 2028. Furthermore, some modern physical releases, such as certain Nintendo Switch 2 titles, now utilize key cards that require additional data downloads, reflecting ongoing changes in media distribution and storage constraints.
Despite these trends, Van Zyll noted that physical media remains popular in Latin America due to its collectibility and the ability to trade or lend games. While the format of physical releases continues to evolve, Nintendo intends to continue offering these options to meet regional demand.
