Nintendo Latin America Vice President and General Manager Bill van Zyll recently confirmed that the company has no current plans to transition exclusively to digital game distribution. In an interview with YouTuber Coelho no Japão, he emphasized that Nintendo remains committed to maintaining a neutral stance regarding physical media.

The company intends to prioritize consumer preferences when determining its distribution strategy. Nintendo acknowledges that many fans maintain a strong affinity for physical copies, which informs their decision to continue supporting the format alongside digital options on hardware like the Nintendo Switch 2.

This stance contrasts with Sony Interactive Entertainment, which announced in July that it will cease production of physical game discs starting in January 2028. This shift by a major platform holder has sparked significant debate among players regarding the future of physical media in the console market.

While Nintendo has not committed to a full digital shift, it is exploring hybrid solutions. The Nintendo Switch 2 utilizes key cards that require data downloads before play, serving as a compromise between physical and digital formats. Meanwhile, Microsoft has introduced features allowing users to convert physical Xbox discs into digital licenses.
