The developer of the upcoming roguelike GUNBOAT-8, mattdoesdev, recently shared a surprising discovery regarding the game's Steam demo. After analyzing player data, the developer found that a user had spent nearly 20 hours playing the demo while utilizing cheats.
The data revealed that the player possessed 150 legendary items in a single run, far exceeding the typical limit of one or two. Furthermore, the player reportedly spent 1000 times the amount of currency they had actually earned, suggesting the use of a currency-generating exploit.
The developer initially suspected that developer tools might have been accidentally included in the demo, but this was not the case. Despite having mechanisms to detect save file manipulation, the specific methods used by this player and at least two others remained unidentified.
Since GUNBOAT-8 is a single-player experience without online rankings, the developer stated that players are free to enjoy the game as they wish. The incident highlights the diverse ways individuals engage with games, even when using unauthorized methods to bypass standard limitations.
