Saturday Night Live recently aired a sketch parodying the upcoming release competition between Grand Theft Auto 6 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. This broadcast prompted former Nintendo employees Krysta Yang and Kit Ellis to reflect on a previous, poorly received SNL skit featuring Elon Musk dressed as Wario.
According to Yang and Ellis, who both worked at Nintendo for over a decade, the Wario sketch was not well-received by the company. They noted that the segment felt disconnected from any specific game release and contained uncomfortable subject matter, leading staff to question the portrayal of the character.
While Nintendo maintains regular contact with SNL producers to coordinate game access and information, the pair clarified that the company had no involvement in the Wario sketch. Regarding the recent Zelda and GTA 6 parody, Yang described the skit as generally fine but occasionally cringey, despite praising the custom-made Link costume.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which features updated art and performance changes, is scheduled for release on 5th November. It faces competition from Grand Theft Auto 6, which is set to launch on 19th November.
