Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed recent rumors regarding the games division, firmly informing the New York Times that the brand is not up for acquisition or divestment.
Sharma explained that leadership will pursue proper partnerships and operational models necessary for success. This response follows persistent speculation that the division might separate while maintaining ties to Microsoft.
The New York Times reported that the games division currently generates about six percent of total corporate profits. Meanwhile, Sharma assumed leadership in February following a background leading CoreAI at Microsoft and serving as Instacart chief operating officer, despite lacking prior gaming experience.
Her tenure brought extensive downsizing, including staff reductions and studio closures that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella praised as a sustainable business model. Subsequent changes involved transferring Rare and the Halo franchise to Activision, proposing Ninja Theory's closure, and eliminating more roles recently. Additionally, Game Pass subscribers peaked before declining, prompting altered release strategies for Call of Duty, while Sharma notes a base of five hundred million monthly players and cloud expansion goals in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia.
