Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve has officially launched to a strong critical and player reception, earning an 88 on Metacritic and a 75 percent user average on Steam. However, developer Bandai Namco Aces has found itself facing unexpected criticism regarding the handling of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War.
The 2006 title was provided as a pre-order bonus for Ace Combat 8, meaning players who did not pre-order can no longer obtain it. Furthermore, the Steam version is bundled directly inside the massive 130GB download of Ace Combat 8 rather than existing as a separate application, and consequently lacks Steam Achievements.
Following community complaints on platforms like Reddit and Steam forums demanding standalone downloads and achievements, Bandai Namco Aces issued a response. The studio explained that licensing restrictions and platform specificities prevented a standalone Steam release, forcing them to choose between omitting the classic entirely or including it as an Ace Combat 8 extra.
In light of the intense backlash from players, Bandai Namco Aces announced that it will now review potential options to offer Ace Combat Zero as a separate release on Steam.
