Sony has reiterated its commitment to transitioning away from physical game discs for PlayStation platforms. According to a recent announcement regarding a new PS5 Digital Edition model in Japan, the company confirmed that all new PlayStation titles released from January 2028 will be available exclusively as digital downloads via the PlayStation Store and other retailers.
The policy change is set to impact both PlayStation 5 software and the upcoming generation, which is expected to launch in late 2027. While physical versions of games released prior to January 2028 will remain available, Sony maintains that the broader industry trend toward content digitization is the primary driver behind this strategic decision.
Despite public pressure and criticism from some community members and industry figures, Sony stated that the decision was reached after careful reflection and that they intend to proceed as planned. The company noted that while physical game boxes may still be produced, they will no longer contain discs.
In contrast to Sony's stance, Nintendo has publicly stated that it has no plans to abandon the physical format, citing continued demand from its fanbase. Meanwhile, the new black PS5 Digital Edition announced for Japan is priced at 55,000 yen, approximately 310 euros, and includes regional account restrictions.
