Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent published on September 17, following an initial presentation in March 2025, detailing a system that would allow a PlayStation controller to act as an intermediary for digital purchases.
According to the documentation published by Jorge Cano, the system is designed to send payment data directly from a mobile device to the console via the controller, which would detect a compatible nearby device and transmit the signal.
This mechanism would let users buy games on the PlayStation Store by bringing their phone close to the DualSense controller and confirming the transaction, thereby avoiding manual entry of card numbers through the virtual keyboard.
Additionally, the documentation diagrams show a credit card approaching the controller for gift card purchases, although the filing does not specify the wireless technology intended for this communication.
As is common with corporate patent registrations, this does not guarantee that the technology will be integrated into PS5 or future PlayStation controllers, as companies frequently patent concepts that may change or never reach commercial release.
