Facepunch Studios is initiating a significant overhaul of S&box, a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, following poor reception and low player retention. Founder Garry Newman expressed embarrassment regarding the current state of the platform, which has struggled with mixed reviews and an influx of low-quality, AI-generated content.
The studio intends to shift its focus from prioritizing engine development to improving the actual player experience. Plans include achieving parity with and eventually surpassing the original Garry's Mod by introducing more NPCs, vehicles, and enhanced multiplayer features, while better supporting customization and addons.
Newman admitted that his initial vision of a "Netflix for games" failed, noting that users do not discover content through a static menu of titles. Instead, the platform will pivot toward curation, aiming to host the best and most popular games rather than simply the largest quantity. Additionally, the game will replace its current "citizen" character models with standard human designs.
S&box is scheduled to transition to a free-to-play model towards the end of the year. To compensate existing players, Facepunch will provide exclusive Steam inventory items, with the value of these items scaled based on whether the user originally paid $10 or $20 for the game.
