NVIDIA is honoring the 20th anniversary of the GeForce 8800 GTX, which originally launched on November 8, 2006. To commemorate this milestone, the company has designated the card as the central focus of its GeForce Day 2026 event, featuring various community activities and giveaways.

The 8800 GTX was a landmark release, utilizing the G80 architecture to unify pixel and vertex hardware. It notably introduced CUDA cores, enabling GPU-based computing beyond traditional graphics, and featured 768 MB of GDDR3 memory with 86 GB/s bandwidth. In comparison, the modern RTX 5080 offers significantly higher specifications, including 10,752 CUDA cores and 16 GB of GDDR7 memory.

The card arrived during a pivotal year for PC gaming, supporting titles such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Company of Heroes. It later became synonymous with the demanding requirements of Crysis, a game that defined hardware performance expectations for years following its release.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, NVIDIA is releasing the GeForce Trading Cards Series 1. This collection consists of 14 free designs highlighting historical GPU models, classic games, and technical demos. These cards will be distributed through social media and Reddit threads where the company plans to discuss the legacy of the 8800 GTX.
