On September 22 and 23, 2026, the "The Tenth Mosaic" event at the Tokyo College of France featured a dialogue between Eric Chahi, creator of Another World, and Fumito Ueda, known for ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. The discussion explored their shared commitment to creating immersive, living worlds that transcend mere functional mechanics.
Both creators emphasized the importance of non-verbal communication. Ueda explained that he reduced dialogue in his games to maintain world reality, noting that text can sometimes break immersion. Similarly, Chahi highlighted that minimizing user interfaces allows players to experience the environment directly. They agreed that gestures and environmental design are powerful tools for conveying information without relying on explicit narration.
Ueda and Chahi reflected on how hardware limitations shaped their artistic styles. Ueda noted that while he once struggled against hardware constraints, such as using fog in ICO to hide memory limitations, he now finds his own creative limits more challenging. Chahi added that while early constraints forced innovation, modern technology can sometimes lead to excessive development complexity.
Regarding player experience, Chahi stressed the need for designers to separate their professional perspective from their role as players during testing. Ueda agreed, noting that he focuses on building environments rather than strictly controlling player emotions, comparing the interactive nature of games to cooking, where the player ultimately participates in the process.
