Facepunch Studios creator Garry Newman has announced significant changes for S&box, the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, following widespread criticism. Currently holding a 47% positive rating on Steam, Newman admitted he is ashamed of the project's reception and poor player retention, stating the team "got it wrong" by focusing too heavily on engine development rather than the player experience.

To address these issues, Facepunch plans to transition S&box to a free-to-play model by the end of the year. Existing owners will receive exclusive Steam inventory items as compensation. Furthermore, the developer is abandoning its proprietary game discovery system in favor of Steam Workshop integration, acknowledging that their previous "Netflix for games" approach failed to effectively connect players with content.

Technical and design adjustments are also underway. The game’s 'Citizen' model is being retired to standardize character proportions, while the team works to improve frame rates on lower-end hardware. Additionally, the 'playfund' system now requires creator approval to discourage low-quality content, such as clickers and idlers, while prioritizing higher-quality projects.

Newman expressed regret over the project's current state and the frustration caused to those who paid for early access. He emphasized that the team is committed to making these sweeping changes to improve performance and gameplay, asking for patience as they pivot toward a more player-centric development strategy.
