Epic Games has announced intentions to bring Fortnite to the Linux platform. This expansion is contingent upon the company successfully rebuilding its Easy Anti-Cheat software to ensure security and stability.
The developer aims to release the Epic Games Launcher on Linux once the new anti-cheat version achieves compatibility with a critical mass of distribution maintainers. These technical improvements will also be shared with other developers to facilitate broader Linux support for their titles.
While Valve's Proton has increased Linux gaming accessibility, multiplayer titles have historically avoided the platform due to cheating concerns. For instance, Facepunch previously cited Linux as a significant vector for exploit developers, noting that cheating activity outweighed legitimate usage in their game, Rust.
Regarding the Steam Deck, Epic notes that the current anti-cheat solution lacks support for the device, though they are actively consulting with Valve. Rick Deist, Epic's game security engineering director, confirmed the company is investigating compatibility for SteamOS devices to allow players more flexibility in where they play.
