Dan Houser, former Rockstar Games vice-president and writer of Max Payne 3, has publicly admitted that the 2012 title failed to meet expectations. Despite the game receiving positive critical reception, Houser acknowledges that it underperformed commercially and failed to resonate with a broad audience.
Houser noted that the project offered a structured, linear experience distinct from his work on open-world titles. He praised specific design elements, such as the absence of loading screens and the visual integration of text, which he intended to evoke a digital noir atmosphere.
The game faced criticism for shifting away from the somber, introspective noir identity established by Remedy Entertainment in the series' predecessors. Houser accepted personal responsibility for this disconnect, noting that many players missed the writing style of creator Sam Lake.
While the title is considered a well-crafted shooter, Houser maintains that his contributions as a decision-maker and writer did not achieve the intended success. Meanwhile, Remedy Entertainment is currently working on remakes of the first two games, which remain in production through a collaboration with Rockstar Games.
