Microsoft games chief Asha Sharma has announced the creation of Xbox Labs, a new research and development division. This initiative aims to explore emerging technologies related to game remixing and the rebuilding of software for hardware platforms not originally intended for those titles.

The project, led by chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet, will involve a team of engineers, scientists, and game makers. According to Sharma, the group intends to develop in the open, focusing on ideas that allow more people to play and create, such as porting Windows PC builds to Apple Silicon or browsers via WebAssembly and WebGPU.

While Microsoft clarified that AI usage will not be mandatory for these efforts, the announcement follows recent trends where AI-driven decompilation has been used to remix games. Critics, including developer DarioSamo, argue that automated AI approaches may overlook the stability requirements of recompiled games, noting that non-AI tools can already achieve rapid results.

The initiative arrives amid broader corporate restructuring at Microsoft. While some speculate the labs could improve compatibility for classic titles on modern hardware, others express concern that the focus may shift toward repurposing existing intellectual property rather than fostering entirely new creative concepts.
