Valve's latest Steam hardware survey has sparked confusion after reporting that systems with 32GB of RAM have become the most common configuration on the platform, used by 43,28% of users after a jump of over six percentage points. Media outlets previously claimed this was a historic first, but internet records show identical anomalies occurred in February 2025 and February 2026.
Each of these anomalous months shares a notable surge in the use of simplified Chinese, with this latest instance showing an increase of nearly seven percentage points. Steam surveys have encountered issues involving Chinese players since 2018, often coinciding with major holiday periods in China where user representation is heavily distorted. The current faulty data also incorrectly lists the GeForce 5070, priced at over one thousand euros, as the service's most popular graphics card.
Data is expected to normalize over the next two months. Historical figures from recent months show that 16GB of RAM is still used by 40,8 to 41,5% of players, while 36,6 to 37,5% have adopted 32GB. While a gradual upward trend toward 32GB exists, such a massive sudden overtaking is deemed unlikely until component prices stabilize.
