Xbox has officially established a new initiative called Xbox Labs to investigate recent trends involving game decompilation and the remixing of source code. CEO Asha Sharma announced the project, which will be led by chief technical officer Scott Van Vliet, a former leader of Azure for OpenAI at Microsoft.

The initiative aims to challenge traditional industry assumptions regarding the relationship between hardware and software, as well as the distinction between creation and play. While the announcement avoids explicit references to generative AI, it highlights how games share properties with software workloads that agents can write, run, and test.

Xbox Labs currently consists of a small team of engineers, scientists, and game makers. According to Sharma, the group intends to build in the open and transform emerging concepts into experiences for developers and players, with success measured by increased engagement in playing and creating.

The announcement follows recent industry moves by Google and Unity regarding text-prompt game creation, though Microsoft's specific goals remain vague. Interested parties can track the progress of Xbox Labs by signing up for updates on the official website.
