Electronic Arts has officially unveiled Wing Commander 3: 30th Anniversary Edition, a remaster of the 1994 space combat classic. Announced by producer Jim Vessella at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, the project aims to revitalize the title originally starring Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, and John Rhys-Davies.
The remaster addresses the technical limitations of the original release, which featured cinematic sequences compressed to 240p resolution. By recovering long-lost original film tapes from Electronic Arts' archives, the team is restoring these scenes to provide unprecedented visual quality alongside upscaled versions.
Beyond visual enhancements, the gameplay experience is being modernized. The title will support frame rates up to 60 FPS, include controller compatibility, and incorporate a community-developed improvement patch. Additionally, the release will feature integration with The Kilrathi Saga, though specific details regarding this connection remain unconfirmed.
While a specific release date has not been provided, the game is slated for a PC launch via Steam, GOG, and the EA app.
